If you like red Bordeaux, but can’t afford the big named versions that are classified growths (Grand Cru), here’s what to do. Look for “Petit Chateau”. Literally translated as “small houses”, these are smaller wineries/producers that sit on the same sub-appellations, like Pauillac, Margaux, and St. Estephe, etc. as the big guns, but are not classified in a Cru system. They share the same terroir, grape varieties and often, winemaking styles, but represent great value for the dollar. You’ll get similar characteristics and flavour profiles and even ageability in many of these at a fraction of the cost. The labels will say “Chateau” or “Domaine” something or other with a sub-appellation designation like Pauillac, but no “Growth” indication.
