Vin Doux Naturel

Vin Doux Naturel or, VDN for short, is a specialty wine and translates to “natural wine” in English. However, contrary to the English translation, this wine could be considered unnaturally sweet. Normally sweet wines contain so much sugar that yeast dies off before all of it is converted to alcohol. This wine has pure grape spirits or brandy added to it halfway through fermentation (fortification), which kills the yeast on contact preventing it from converting the remaining sugar. The resulting wine is sweet with dominant grape flavours and more alcohol. Many of them come from the south of France, are great value and made from Muscat and Grenache. They’re fab after a meal, with cheeses or dessert.
