Wine Appreciation and Humidity

Humidity not only affects the functioning of the taster, but the wine as well and can be problematic. When it comes to the taster, if the environment is too dry, the olfactory senses in the nose dry up affecting its job, inhibiting smell, and wine odours are less easily perceived. If too humid, the taster is too hot and sticky to properly focus on the wine. The wine itself is jeopardized. When too dry, wine “dummies” up and exhibits less character. If too humid, alcohol in the wine tends to stick out more and glassware can fog up making visual examination difficult, especially with chilled selections. The best or ideal humidity to taste wine in that benefits both the taster and the vino is approximately 70%.
